'70s interiors are having a revival. Their flower power wall art, retro oak dressing tables, and their brightly-coloured glass trinkets. The mushroom lamps, the patterned wallpaper, and the unapologetically colourful upholstered furniture. These motifs have stepped right out of the mid-century of late, making a home on the TikTok and Instagram feeds of your favourite interiors influencers. 

“'70s interiors are making a big comeback,” says Matilda Martin, trend specialist at Lick. “This decor style is relaxed and fun, evocative of the free-spiritedness and optimism of the ‘70s era. It includes an eclectic mix of textures and patterns, as well as a lean towards natural materials like rattan or cork, handcrafted ceramics, and macrame wall hangings. Not to mention a house plant or two.

“Warmth emanates from a '70s-inspired home, largely through its colour scheme. People are adding that 70s groove and energy into their homes by incorporating earthy browns, terracotta reds and oranges (think Lick’s Red 03 or Orange 02 on your walls) and opting for low lighting in the form of the iconic mushroom lamp.”  

Essentially, '70s homewares allow us to inject personality into our homes in a way that modern, Scandinavian-inspired themes just can't. Sure, the clean lines and muted colour palettes of more recent trends are chic, but bold use of colour comes with a certain charm.

And there's a scientific reason why we're drawn to the '70s, too. “The colour palette linked with 70s interiors can have a number of positive psychological effects on our moods,” says Tash Bradley, Lick’s director of interior design and colour psychologist. “The base colours of earthy browns and terracotta reds make our homes feel stable and comfortable whilst the brighter colours and patterns often encourage us to feel happier and optimistic.” We're realising the energy and positivity that colour gives to us – and we're making moves towards it.
