UB40 (Ali Campbell, Astro & Mickey Virtue)
UB40 are Britain's greatest reggae artists and have survived more than 30 years in the music business and have clocked up more than 40 million record sales worldwide with songs like Kingston Town and Red, Red Wine.
They released a Top 5 single in the UK in February 1980 and, in 1981, released a brace of albums, 'Present Arms' and 'Present Arms In Dub'. Their breakthrough came with the hit single, 'Red, Red Wine'. The song topped the British singles charts in 1983 and, after renewed promotion following the 1988 Nelson Mandela Concert at Wembley, the single reached the number 1 spot in the US.
Touring America and Canada in 1985, the group celebrated another hit single with 'I Got You Babe', recorded with Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders. In 1986 they finished 'Rat In The Kitchen', and further recording in 1987 and 1988 was complimented by a world tour.
The band's initial line up lasted for 30 years from the band's formation in 1978 until front-man Ali Campbell's departure from the band in 2008. Since that time, two other founding members (Mickey Virtue and Astro) have also left the band, and the trio of Campbell, Virtue, and Astro have since formed UB40 Reunited.
Heather Small
After selling several million records, winning two Brit Awards and the Mercury Music Prise, performing across the globe and recording a track that become an unofficial national anthem, Heather Small is on of the most successful female recording artists of recent years.
As Part of M People, hits such as 'Moving On Up', 'One Night In Heaven' and 'Search For The Hero' and albums like Elegant Slumming, Bizarre Fruit and Fresco achieving massive worldwide success, Heather became one of the seminal British voices of the 1990s, with the band winning the Best British Dance Act Award at the Brits in 1994 and 1995, as well as the Mercury Music Prize for Elegant Slumming.
Heather has since had great successes with two solo albums – the title track of her ‘Proud’ album has gone on to become the soundtrack to a whole host of very special events including London’s successful 2012 Olympic bid, the 60th anniversary of VE Day in Trafalgar Square, the launch of Queen Mary 2, the Tsunami Relief Concert, England's victory at the Rugby World Cup celebrations.
The Human League
They’re used to everyone from Madonna to Moby, Pet Shop Boys to Robbie Williams, citing them as an influence! The band who gave us the greatest ever Christmas Number 1 single with 1981/2’s ‘Don’t You Want Me’, who have had four Top 10 albums and eight Top 10 singles in the UK as well as two US Number 1 singles and sold 20 million records worldwide.
The most lauded TV program of recent times, time-travel saga Ashes To Ashes, based one of its main characters on Joanne Catherall, while the mighty Philip Oakey appeared in a recent episode of Top Gear at the personal behest of Jeremy Clarkson, who regularly name-checks the League in his newspaper column.
Tony Hadley
Pioneers of the 80s Romantic movement, Spandau Ballet formed in 1978 and had numerous chart topping singles and albums all over the world, some of the most memorable being the singles “Gold”, “Only When You Leave”, “Lifeline”, the epic “Through the Barricades” and of course the international number one “True”; the latter famously sampled by PM Dawn in 1991 and featured on Paul Anka’s Rock Swings in 2005.
As lead singer of Spandau Ballet, Tony Hadley has, over the years, earned the accolade of being one of pop music’s greatest vocalists. In addition to all the band’s songs, many will remember his prominent vocal contribution to the Band Aid UK charity single “Do They Know It’s Christmas” and subsequent 1985 London appearance at Live Aid. He also performed solo at the Nelson Mandela Concert at Wembley in June 1988.
Nik Kershaw
He signed with MCA Records in 1983 and, in the September of the same year, "I Won't Let The Sun Go Down" was released for the first time, reaching a respectable No.47 in the UK charts ( achieving a rather more respectable No. 2 when re-released the following summer).
This was followed in January 1984 by "Wouldn't It Be good" which languished gracefully at No.4 in the UK charts for five weeks and was to break Kershaw worldwide. The seminal “Human Racing” album was released in March and achieved platinum sales in many territories. He managed to squeeze in two European tours, four more hit singles and another platinum album (“The Riddle”) before the end of the year.
1985 brought three more hit singles, tours of Europe, Canada, Australia, the States and Japan and an appearance at "Live Aid". He was to record two more albums with MCA, “Radio Musicola” and “The Works” before leaving the spotlight in 1989 to focus on songwriting and production.
Chas & Dave
Still selling out Theatres all over the UK promoting their hit album ‘THAT’S WHAT HAPPENS’ on Warner Brothers Records. Over the past two years they have headlined THE ROYAL VARIETY SHOW, sold out THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL LONDON, performed an arena tour with STATUS QUO and performed at the VE DAY CONCERT which was televised on BBC TV.
CHAS & DAVE know how to give an audience a good time, performing all the hits that made this Cockney duo famous. ’GERTCH’ ‘SIDEBOARD SONG’ ‘RABBIT’ ‘AINT NO PLEASING YOU’’MARGATE’ etc. So due to public demand here they are once more.
The Christians
Renowned for an endless string of soulful yet socially aware hits ...Forgotten Town, Ideal World, Born Again, Harvest for the World, Whats in a Word, Hooverville, Words, Father, The Bottle and many more The Christians enjoyed huge acclaim in the late 80s and early 90s both in the UK and Europe and often confused people with their band name (in fact just the brothers surname with absolutely no religious connotation!
Still headed by enigmatic lead singer Garry Christian (who very much deserves the Daily Mirror’s description of him as having ‘one of the finest voices in pop) who has only gained in vocal stature (and wit) over the years! the band are enjoying a revival currently touring successfully in the UK and Europe.
Clare Grogan
Clare has worked extensively in Film, Television, Theatre and Radio for more than 30 years. The summer she left school her band; ‘Altered Images’ were signed to Sony Records. Following this, Clare appeared in the BAFTA winning comedy Gregory’s Girl. Altered Images’ quickly had worldwide success, selling millions of records, topping the charts in several countries. They recorded 3 Top 10 Albums. She still performs at festivals around the country playing to vast audiences.
She has had roles in dozens of TV and Radio Dramas on some of the UK’s best-loved TV shows including, Skins, Waterloo Road, Eastenders, Red Dwarf and Father Ted. Her film credits include, Gregory’s Girl, Comfort and Joy, Loyal and the recent BAFTA winning feature The Wee Man. Brother Beyond
First coming to prominence by joining the boyband Brother Beyond as their lead singer, in 1987 (when the band and their record label won an auction to record a track with the successful 1980s record producers Stock, Aitken and Waterman), BROTHER BEYOND had a very successful period between 1987 – 1991 there two biggest hits being ‘THE HARDER I TRY’ which reached NO 2 in 1988 and stayed on the charts for 14 weeks.
This was followed by ‘HE AIN’T NO COMPETITION’ which reached NO 6 in the same year and stayed in the charts for 10 weeks. NATHAN MOORE still fronts the current line up of BROTHER BEYOND 5 piece in total and performs in their set the two biggest hits plus an entertaining repertoire of covers so that their show appeals to audiences of all generations.
