Ted and Venus
In his directorial debut, Bud Cort attempts to recapture some of the eccentric appeal of his 1971 starrer Harold and Maude but he's picked the wrong story and treated it far too seriously.
In his directorial debut, Bud Cort attempts to recapture some of the eccentric appeal of his 1971 starrer Harold and Maude but he’s picked the wrong story and treated it far too seriously.
Cort stars as Ted Whitley, a 35-year-old hippie on disability. A virginal, pathetically earnest nerd, Ted has a vision of a gorgeous young lady emerging from the sea, and when she turns out to be Linda (Kim Adams), the community service worker helping him find an apartment, he feels compelled to pursue her.
Egged on by his buddy (Jim Brolin) and encouraged by her enthusiasm for his poetry and general friendliness, Ted begins a romantic campaign that quickly degenerates into obscene phone calls and other antisocial acts.
Aside from telling an actively offputting story [by Paul Ciotti], Cort the director hasn’t done a bad job of putting it up on the screen. He has packed the cast with a lively assortment of actor friends, and newcomer Adams is a stunner with a winning personality. Pic so impressively suggests the look and attitude of the time of the action (1974) that it almost could have been shot then.
